Honorable Kerai Mariur
Vice President Kerai Mariur has had a distinguished political career serving four consecutive terms in the Palau National Congress as the Delegate of the State of Ngarchelong. His political career began during the Fourth Olbiil Era Kelulau and concluded during the Seventh Olbiil Era Kelulau based on the People’s Popular Initiative. Throughout his term he ably served as Chairman of the Standing Committee on Youth & Cultural Affairs, Judiciary and Governmental Affairs, Environment and Ecology, and the Ways and Means & Financial Matters. He also held membership to numerous standing committees of the House of Delegates where he too avidly introduced legislations that later became public laws such as the Marine Protection Act, Republic of Palau Copyright Act, and most recently where he co-authored the Protected Areas Network Act. He devoted his knowledge of finance and accounting to legislations addressing the Republic’s Annual National Budget, improvements of capital infrastructures such as the National Capitol Construction, and the Republic’s annual obligations which includes the Ninth Festival of Pacific Arts. Furthermore, he took stance on important and crucial but unpopular issues which resulted in the enactment of the Code of Ethics Act and Government Accountability Office.
During his term in the Fifth Olbiil Era Kelulau, he represented the House of Delegates in international and regional organizations such as the Asian Pacific Parliamentarian’s Union (APPU) and the Association of Pacific Islands Legislatures (APIL) while he continued to be an advocate and served in community organizations.
He was born on June 04, 1951 in Ollei, Ngarchelong State, located on the northern tip of Babeldaob. The State is known for its huge monoliths called Badrulchau that are among the most impressive archeological artifacts in Palau and the Pacific Region. Vice President Kerai Mariur successfully completed his studies at Cannon’s International Business College majoring in Business Administration and Higher Accounting.
Mr. Mariur is married to Laurinda Waisang Fritz Mariur and together they have four children and two grandchildren.In November of 2008 he ran a successful one-ticket campaign as the Vice Presidential Candidate for Presidential Candidate Johnson Toribiong. Upon being inaugurated as the Vice President of the Eighth Constitutional Government of the Republic of Palau on January 15, 2009, the Honorable Kerai Mariur was also appointed as the Minister of Administration/Finance.
